How To Stop Your Staffy Chewing Things They Shouldn't.

If you have a Staffy that is chewing on items they shouldn't, you may be feeling frustrated.

This can be a common issue for a lot of dog owners, especially those with a new puppy.

Chewing may be a sign of stress, boredom, or even teething.

To prevent your belongings from being damaged, there are steps you can take to stop your Staffy from this behaviour.

Here are five of our favourite tips.

1. Provide Plenty of Toys & Treats.

The best way to stop your Staffy from chewing on things they shouldn’t is to provide them with plenty of toys & long-lasting treats to enjoy

This will help keep them distracted and will give them something to chew on that won’t cause any damage (well maybe to the toy, but better that than your dining room table right?)

Make sure you provide them with a variety of toys such as nylon, rubber & even soft plush toys. This will help to keep them engaged for a longer period. Long-lasting treats, such as pig ears, roo tails, and pork trotters, are also great options.

2. Supervise Your Dog.

Whilst training your Staffy it’s important to always supervise them when they are in the house. This is necessary to ensure that your pup does not get into anything that may be dangerous or damaging.

Create a safe environment for your Staffy. Put away items that are tempting for your dog to chew and provide your pup with their own space where they can relax and explore without getting into trouble.

3. Use Bitter Sprays

Bitter sprays are also a great way to deter your Staffy from chewing on things they shouldn’t. These sprays contain an unpleasant taste that will help your dog understand that they shouldn’t be chewing on certain items.

4. Distract Your Dog.

When you catch your staffy in the act of chewing something they shouldn't be, make a loud noise (such as clapping your hands) to startle them and redirect their attention to something else. To do this try offering a toy, taking them for a walk or playing a game with them.

5. Provide Plenty of Exercise.

Giving your Staffy plenty of exercise can help prevent them from engaging in unwanted chewing. Exercise can aid in relieving boredom and stress which are often the root of chewing. Ensuring your Staffy gets plenty of physical and mental stimulation will result in less destructive habits.

By remembering these tips, you can prevent your Staffy from chewing on items they shouldn't. Do not punish your Staffy for biting inappropriate items, as this may only confuse them and can lead to other destructive behaviours and issues.
